  • Mission: The activities are designed to develop camaraderie among young riders, thus, hopefully, developing lifelong friendships and a commitment to the sport. The purpose of the program is to encourage our younger members to become involved in the sport of Eventing and perhaps continue this involvement into their adult lives as members of the US Team, volunteers at local events, coaches, trainers, competitors, and consumers of equine products. The Young Rider Program consists to two components. The NAYC branch focuses on developing and fronting riders and horses for the North American Youth Championships (NAYC) each summer. The YRAP branch focuses on providing young riders with the education and skills they need to progress through the levels regardless of level. In addition, each has a fund-raising program. The funds raised are used to help defray the costs of the program activities. The YRAP encompass a variety of friendly competitions, camps, and educational activities which provide the educational development necessary for a young rider's progression. While many young riders never endeavor to progress to the NAYC and beyond, YRAP is in place for them to accomplish whatever competitive goals they do have. In short - Our members are the future of the sport!

July in Area 2 is booming! Between Starter Horse Trials, Dressage, and Combined Tests and Derbies and Clinics the opportunities abound!

View our full calendar here, and don't forget to add your events, it's free and easy!

  • The twenty sixthth annual combined USDF & USEA Adult Education Seminar is scheduled for Monday, June 2 through Saturday, June 8, 2014 at Green Mountain Horse Association, South Woodstock, Vermont. Our clinicians for this year will again include Michael Page, Jane Hamlin, Jim Koford, John Zopatti, Holger Bechtloff, Diane Ritz, Robert Stevenson, and Robert Costello. This team has proved to be so successful and work together so well that I am hard put to see how they can be improved upon! This format of combining the two disciplines during the same week has proved to be quite successful. New friends are made, and a greater appreciation of the different skills required is evident.

  • Come join us for a fun St Patrick’s Day show at Morven Park Equestrian Center. A great opportunity to shake off the cobwebs before your first Dressage show or Event of the year. Green sweaters in place of jackets encouraged approved helmet required for all phases.

  • Thanks to everyone for your patience in the upgrade of the website. The plan was to import the data from the old system into the new; however that just did not work out. The old ads and calendar were built on separate systems (with separate logins if you remember). The new ads and calendar are integrated with the whole site, so the same login to the site will allow you access to your ads and calendar events.

The downside is that none of the old information is there, so if you have ads or calendar events you will need to add them again. It's a good way to clean house, because things like the cross country schooling were really outdated.

Please feel free to call if you have questions, or need your login information updated/changed. I can be reached at 434-664-7057.

    • Go to the classifieds now (there is an "New Ad" link to add. You can do it without logging in, but you will be better able to manage your ads if you log in first.)
    • Go to the calendar now  (there is a link at the very bottom to  "Add an Event"   Again, logging in first gives you more options to manage your events, but it is not required.)
  • Hi all!

The groundhog might have promised us six more weeks of winter, but Area 2 eventers are taking his forecast in stride.  On January 25, nearly 100 eventers braved snow and ice to gather in Leesburg for the Area 2 annual meeting.

  • I just wanted to share these two awards for two of our amazing Area 2 Adult Rider members.  What an honor it is to know people with so much heart!  Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday, we had a great meeting.  Details to follow soon!

The Area II Annual Meeting and Year End Awards Luncheon will be taking place on Saturday January 25, 2014, at the Best Western in Leesburg, VA. The price has once again been reduced for both the meeting and the awards luncheon this year in order for the membership to take advantage of both the speakers and the forums to not only increase your equine knowledge but to also participate in the planning and development of Area II!

The discussion forums include Adult Riders and Young Riders, the Rules Forum to discuss the new rules instituted along with the Council Meeting and Organizer’s Meeting which are open to all of the members of Area II. Our luncheon speakers this year are the very funny and knowledgeable Dom and Jimmie Schramm who will bring their popular Evention video series to life.

Other speakers include Ann Baumgardner, PhD who will discuss the emotional and mental preparation of competing, a discussion on saddle fitting, and a veterinary presentation on joint disease and new therapies. Other speakers are still in the planning stages and will be announced as they are confirmed. • Selectors have just been approved by the council.

The following selectors will be responsible for choosing the 2013 One and Two Star Teams for NAJYRC:

    1. Will Coleman
    2. Max Corcoran
    3. Holly Hudspeth
    4. Allison Springer
    5. Erin Sylvester

Selectors will be present at Southern Pines 2 this weekend. Please make a point to introduce yourself to them and inform them on your weekend. I also reccommend you make an attempt to watch potential teammates if you have the time. Young Rider times will be available at the Young Rider tent so you can cheer on your potential teammates!

    Thanks and Good Luck!

  • As we all know, the journey to the NAJYRC is long, expensive, but so very rewarding and unforgettable. Each Young Rider set on the path for qualification should be aware that fundraising is a huge part of the Young Rider program. The more money our program raises throughout the year, the less financial burden each individual has on themselves. Each day we work towards this goal by setting up various fundraisers at events, and reaching out to find sponsorships and support. Our goal is to lift the financial burden off of every Young Rider, but we cannot do this alone. We want Young Riders to be responsible for their program by volunteering and fundraising to make their program better.

  • IMGAMack_3Frederick Pony Clubber Mackenzie Taylor and her precious partner, a rescue pony named Ink Spot (Inky),  have been actively competing in Mounted Games competitions for several years, both in the US and overseas.  With the help of sponsors and lots of fundraising (it takes upwards of 10k to send a horse overseas), Mackenzie and Inky were able to travel to Wales where the pair won the 2012 International Mounted Games Association World Championship!

Now in 2013, TaylorMade Stables, in Damascus, Md, are gearing up for their 2nd Annual Spring Jumper Shows in efforts to raise funds for Mackenzie to return to Wales to defend their Gold Medal. Come join in the fun and support on Sunday, April 7th (March 15 date is canceled, sorry for an inconvenience).  Go to http://www.taylormadestables.com/events.htm for more info and the prize list.

  • Hello Adult Riders!

We have some wonderful opportunities on tap for you this year.  If you are new to the Adult Rider program, welcome and if you are returning, we are glad to have you back!

First I want to say we will continue to support the Training and Novice 3-Day at Waredaca in the Fall.  More details on that as the time gets closer.

We are planning a special Adult Rider camp August 10th and 11th at Kelly'Ford Equestrian Center in Remington, VA.  The wonderful Carol Kozlowski will be our clinician for two days of flat, stadium and XC work.  Mark your calendars now and plan to attend this event.  In order to make this more affordable than past clinics and camps the fee for two days (includes facility fee) is $275 per horse and rider combination.  If you are a paid member of the Area 2 Adult Riders, you will get $75 off the cost of your entry!  Membership in the adult riders is only $25, so this is one way to get something back for your fee and membership.  Stabling, camping, and cabin rentals are available at an additional cost.  Full details and an entry form will be posted here soon as well as emailed to the adult riders email list.  Levels available will be Baby Beginner Novice thru Prelim.  We are planning a weekend of education, fun, camaraderie, and a Saturday night cookout.  I think this clinic will fill fast once we open it, so don't delay in getting your entries in!

The USEA Chronicle of the Horse Eastern Adult Team Challenge (ATC's) will be held at Windridge Farm Horse Trials in Moorsboro, NC, October 4-6 2013.  This is a recognized Horse Trial currently part of Area III.  You can find out more about Windridge on their website at: http://www.windridgeservices.com.  It promises to be a great time with competitors from Areas 2, 3 and 8 all committing so far.  Plan to attend one of the most fun events for adult riders of the year.

Keep smiling, riding and stay warm.  See you all soon!

    PLEASE VOLUNTEER

If you are registering for the 2013 USEA Area II Year End Awards Program, please don’t forget, the program has a “Volunteer Incentive” component.  Our sport can only exist with everybody getting involved so please volunteer, this can be by volunteering as a fence judging, scoring, scribing, set up, take down, stuffing packets, or really just about anything directly relating to eventing.  The total hour requirement can be completed in any variety of ways.  For example, volunteering for one day at an event, or two half days at different events. So when you plan your 2013 competition calendar, schedule to do some volunteering of at least 8 hours during the current calendar year, preferably at an Area II recognized event.  All you have to do is contact an organizer to find out how you can help.  They are waiting for your call!  Please don’t make us chase you for a volunteer confirmation, volunteering can be just as rewarding as competing!

  • The 2013 Area II Annual Meeting and Year End Awards Luncheon will be taking place on Sunday January 13, 2013 at Carradoc Hall at the Holiday Inn Leesburg, VA. The price has been drastically reduced by half for both the meeting and the awards luncheon this year in order for the membership to take advantage of both the speakers and the forums to not only increase your equine knowledge but to also participate in the planning and development of Area II! The discussion forums include the Adult Riders and Young Riders, the Rules Forum to discuss the new rules (including the One Fall and Out Rule! and licensing of riders put forth by FEI), and also the Council Meeting and Organizer’s Meeting which are open to all of the members of Area II. The speakers are still in the planning stages and will be announced as they are confirmed. Last year we successfully added a keynote speaker to the Awards Luncheon and will continue that this year as well! We hope to have an upper level rider discuss David’s approach for US eventing. It represents a major change and he is working not just on the upper level riders, but even our youngest riders, Young Event horses, and beeeding.

    The speaker schedule is below:

  • The committee that selected Sinead Halpin as the Area 2 NAJYRC coach felt that we should have coaches for YRAP and recommended Lynn Symansky and Skyeler Icke-Voss. The Area 2 Council approved a new YRAP pilot program with Lynn and Skyler as the YRAP coaches based on a program they submitted to the Council. They have planned a full year of training with a goal of team competitions at the Waredaca Nov/Train 3-Day. This program will be self-funded the first year, financed by combined tests run at Morningside Training Farm and supplemented by participation fees at clinics/camps. At the USEA annual meeting, the NAJYRC coordinators saw this as well structured, and a great feeder program for future NAJYRC riders. David O’Connor also praised this pilot program as it fits in well with the new Advancing Riders program he is helping to develop. Go to the YRAP area on the Area 2 webpage to read about this exciting new program. They are having their first YRAP clinic Jan 5-6.
  • Save the Date!!! January 13:

The Area II Annual Meeting and Year End Awards Luncheon will be taking place on Sunday January 13, 2013 at Carradoc Hall at the Holiday Inn Leesburg, VA. The price has been drastically reduced for both the meeting and the awards luncheon this year in order for the membership to take advantage of both the speakers and the forums to not only increase your equine knowledge but to also participate in the planning and development of Area II!  You will receive additional emails with more details about the meeting. The discussion forums include the Adult Riders and Young Riders – including YRAP,  the Rules Forum to discuss the new rules (including the One Fall and Out Rule! and licensing of riders put forth by FEI), and also the Council Meeting and Organizer’s Meeting which are open to all of the members of Area II. There are other speakers and will be announced as they are confirmed – stay tuned. Last year we successfully added a keynote speaker to the Awards Luncheon and will continue that this year as well! We hope to have an upper level rider discuss David’s approach for US eventing. It represents a major change and he has plans not just that effect the upper level riders, but even our youngest riders, Young Event horses, and breeding programs. Also we will again be having our silent auction which includes entries in our area horse trial. This year we will have the auction online as well as at the meeting.

  • smurf2ABOUT THE SMURFIE AWARDS

Sponsored by VTO Saddlery and the Area II Adult Riders Organized and presented by Yvonne Lucas

Calling adult (lower-level) riders “Smurfs” originated with Captain Mark Phillips some years ago. His comments caused quite an uproar among the adult riders, who make up the great majority of USEA members. DC McBroom made sure Mark was reminded of his comments at every opportunity by leaving a Smurf doll where he would be sure to encounter it. Since then many adult riders have adopted the Smurf title as their own.

I wanted to sponsor an award for adult riders that wasn’t based on performance in competitions. The various Smurf dolls available gave me some ideas for award categories, and in 2006 the first Smurfie Awards were presented.

The recipients are nominated and selected by the members of the Area II Adult Riders. Except for the “Hug your Smurf” category, nominees must be current, paid members of the Ar2ARs. (I will check and let nominators know if their nominated person isn’t a member.) Nominees may not have won in the nominated category before.

Smurfie categories and descriptions are listed below. A list of past winners by year and by category is also below. Nominations will generally run through November, and voting will take place in December. Winners are announced at the Area II Annual Meeting, usually in January.

Winners receive ribbons, a plush Smurf doll and little goodies, and some wonderful items kindly donated by VTO Saddlery.

Nominations are closed for 2012. Stay tuned for results!

  • Cindy is coordinating the ATC team applications for area 2. She wanted to remind everyone that the ATC’s are at VHT in November and people should, at Penny Ross’s request, if possible get their entries to Cindy by no later than October 5 so she can batch them all together and send them to Penny altogether. They should put the name of their team on the entry so she can match them up. If they do not have a team let Cindy or Donna Bottner know and they will get them on a team.

  • Cindy Deporter has asked me to remind area 2 members about the need for volunteers for the T3D/N3D that the Adult Riders sponsor at Waredaca especially for XC on Friday. Also Stephen Bradley is  providing educational sessions all week and his sessions are open to all Area II folks. Cindy will be getting a final schedule out soon.

Sign up on the Waredaca website, indicating you want to volunteer for N/T 3 Day.

  • The area 2 championships at Morven received 180+ entries which takes precedent over regular entries. This response to the championships is unprecedented. However, that meant that over 100 riders did not get in to the regular HT. ESDCTA wanted to remind riders that they still have room that same weekend.
  • (this was mostly drafted by Duncan MacRae who headed the selection committee)

2012 marked the end of the YR team of Gwen Dean and Audrey Wiggins as out YR Coordinators and David and Lauren O’Brien as our YR Coaches. They did a great job over two (three year) terms and we are grateful to them for all the work they did to bring teams to the NAJYRC over the last six years.

Area II is pleased to welcome Pam Medlin and Meg Kepferle as our new YR Coordinators .  Meg and Pam volunteered for this important and difficult job and we are confident that they will do a great job but we still needed to select a Team Coach.

  • Thank you all for participating in the auction. We apologize for any confusion in logging in. If you set up a username 3 years ago, chances are you don't remember the login! (or if you are like me if you did it 3 weeks ago you might forget). And the system was making people confirm their emails, which I turned off and manually confirmed everyone. But anyway...

Next we had the crazy email deluge, which is automatically done by the software. I will contact the developer about that for next time.

Then DC said the USEA paypal account is on the fritz for whatever reason. She is checking into that.

We appreciate all your patience. Remember it's all for a good cause!!  As soon as the paypal issue is resolved we will let you know so you can pay correctly. Of course our 3 day payment window will be extended because of this.

If you want to mail a check you can do that instead. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for payment arrangements.

Thanks again and sorry for the snafus.

  • Every year at the USEA Annual Meeting and Convention an Awards Ceremony is held. This is an opportunity for the sport to recognize those horses and riders who have excelled in Eventing througout the year. It is also an opportunity to recognize those very important people who have served the sport tirelessly both in a non-riding capacity and in a riding capacity during their golden years. While it is a simple matter of tabulating points earned in a competition to arrive at horse and rider awards, it is a very  different proposition when it comes to the nonrider awards; these awards require nominations from our members.

    2012 Calendar of Events

  • The Olympics in London, 'tis the season for bringing home medals!!! And bring some home we did this year at the 2012 NAJYRC! We experienced such a great week of competition and team work this year in Kentucky and a great time was had by all.

We held our training camp the week before at Kincora farm home of the team coaches David and Lauren O'Brien. All of kids had a great time and were such a pleasure to be with! The horses appeared fit and ready for competition. Our final gallop was held on the steeplechase track at the Carolina Horse Park.  The Carolina Horse Park has been such a strong supporter of our team, and has allowed us to gallop there for the last 6 years. A big thank you to the staff at the park for providing us with such a wonderfully safe place to prepare our team horses!! On Monday the 16th we all shipped out to Kentucky and arrived safe and sound to the wonderful chaos of NAJYRC arrival. The horses worked well the day before jogs and all looked to be going our way. As always the First Horse Inspection proved stressful and humbling as Erin Nolan's horse Balmoral Avenue was held and then unfortunately not accepted upon representing.

Dressage proved to be a stiff competition as we expected in both the CCI* and CCI**.

  • The USEA’s Area II is currently accepting applications for the Young Rider Team Coach for 2013. The current team coaches are stepping down after the 2012 season, and Area II would like to open the search up to anyone who is qualified and interested.

USEA Area Young Riders Coaches must be ICP Certified Level III, however, if an applicant is not certified Area II may consider supporting them in seeking their certification. Qualifications for the position include: substantial coaching experience, excellent interpersonal skills (must be able to communicate with parents and young riders alike during some trying times), and currently competing at the Advanced level. Of course not every candidate may meet all of these conditions and the credentials of each candidate will be weighed.

  • Welcome Adult Riders!

Let's make 2012 the best year to get out, get involved, join together, and compete.  We had a mild winter and a lot of folks went South early in the season so I hope everyone is warmed up and ready to go.  Whether you are just schooling, competing unrecognized or recognized, Area 2 has something for everyone.  I hope to see lots of you at the Area Championships this year, to be held at Morven Park on October 6-7, 2012.  And don't forget to start making plans to attend the Cronicle of the Horse USEA Eastern Adult Team Challenge this year at Virginia Horse Trials November 2-4, 2012.

Lynn Symansky and Cathy Fredrickson have been working on the lesson plans for our camp between traveling to the CCIs and CICs.  Everyone will get at least two lessons a day include private dressage sessions and jumping in small groups.   We also have many lectures and hands on horsemanship activities planned.  Two of the instructors (Sinead Haplin and Doug Payne) are currently on the list for the Games, if they go to London, we  will have Jennie Brannigan and Hannah Burnett fill in.  Others are in the wings, should the camp size grow significantly.

  • FINAL RESULTS FOR  USEA Area 2 2012 Eventing Season have been posted. CONGRATS TO EVERYONE! PLEASE VERIFY YOUR POINTS!

  • We had great time at the Fork this weekend. Many of the YRs were riding more than one horse, which made taking advantage of any of the free YR Advancement activities difficult for some. On Friday, three riders took advantage of shadow scribing in dressage. This is becoming very popular as the YRs learn what is important in riding their test, or what their judge prefers to see, while also getting to practice scribing.

Friday night we set show jumping with Sally Ike, and once again those who did got around with a double clear. A few parents, signifcant others, and grooms, came up to Show Jumping on Saturday when they had time and assisted with jump crew to reset the courses from Intermediate, to Preliminary, to Training.  Who ever the volunteer gate keeper was for Intermediate was FANTASTIC.

  • You really have to see it in person to appreciate it, but the renewal taking place at the Green Mountain Horse Association’s 65-acre South Woodstock, Vermont facility is impressive. A record mild fall has helped considerably to maximize work being done on the Cross-Country Upgrade Project, launched last spring as an effort to rejuvenate the historic course at the multi-discipline equestrian center. Coupled with ongoing clean-up from Hurricane Irene, it feels as though the entire facility is being transformed by excavators, engineers, carpenters, stone masons and wood carvers.

  • Our February 25th competition is scheduled one week   before Southern Pines Adult Camp, and two weeks before Southern Pines Horse Trials I.

The rolling sand-based turf will feature inviting courses at the Novice, Beginner Novice, Maiden and Green as Grass levels. Novice and Beginner Novice courses will include water, banks, and ditches.  The Maiden course will have an optional 'run-thru' at the water complex.  There will be no water crossing for Green as Grass, but the course may include a small bank and ridiculously small ditch.

    1. Area Championships: This is the first year we tried to coordinate the Area II championships. The P-BN at the VHT seemed to be well attended, although it proved to be a challenge this year because of bad weather. But Penny and Brian did an excellent job adjusting the schedule to make them happen. However there seemed to be little interest in the upper level championships (Int & Adv). In fact some areas have dropped championships for anything above Prelim. I would appreciate any feedback you might have. Consider responding to the following issues:

Here is the letter from Michelle Gargiulo about her T3D weekend:

    "Dear Gretchen,

I wanted to write this to you before too much time goes by and it slips my mind... as I quickly get pulled back to the reality that I have a "real job"... so now for the next few months as I wait for the 2012 season to begin, I can day dream out my office window remembering the season just past and the fantastic time I had at the T3D - which was the "close" of my season.  I couldn't have imagined a better way to end the year.

  • smurf2Sponsored by VTO Saddlery and the Area II Adult Riders  and Organized and presented by Yvonne Lucas

    ABOUT THE SMURFIE AWARDS

  • Consider attending the YRAP FREE clinic without your horse and learn how to make your ride even better at your next event.

In dressage lessons we learn lots about doing twenty meter circles, and how to get our horses round and on the bit.  Rarely will your lessons focus on how to get the best score possible.  Sit in the dressage booth with Cathy Tucker,  a rated dressage judge.  Ask questions, learn to scribe, and see what the judge sees.  Nate Chambers credits his success in dressage in large part to having spent time with Brian Ross in the judges booth.  Come learn the ring craft and what the dressage judges are really looking for.

  • Wow... What great fun we had this weekend at The Fork.  The weather held up nicely.  Friday, about a dozen people worked 3 hours with Sally Ike setting the course.  A few were competitors, and others were Young Riders, working students, and grooms.  The Fork's strong men and the boy friends where very useful lifting the heavy standards.

We learned about how to use the unique cups for back rail of oxers, the proper way" to measure the distances, and why she built related lines that were not perfect 12' distances.  The YRAP attendees got to take copies of the actual course blue print home so they could rebuild the course at home. The Fork treated us to pizza for dinner which we were very grateful.

After several years of little activity, Chris has arranged for some excellent opportunities (working with Sally Ike designing and setting up the SJ course at the Fork), a course walk at Morven, a clinic with Lauren and David O'Brien, and a Team competition at VHT (there were 15 teams!). She has more activities (all of which are subsidized) planned for the rest of the year including three camps/clinics, another team competition, and a “sit with a dressage judge” opportunity. We had 7 qualify for the * and have selected the following young riders tobe the 6 that will go to NAJYRC.

  • FROM THE OVERLOOK FARM FOLKS:

Like everyone else in the eventing community, we are horrified and saddened to hear of Monday's tragic fire. We would love to host a "ticket round" day at Overlook Farm in Berryville, VA with 100% of the proceeds to be divided evenly between all of the riders affected.

We have a beautiful Grand Prix paddock with good footing that will be set up with a course designed by my partner, show jumper Brian Murphy. We will open the course at 8am, and close it at 8pm, on Wednesday, 15 June. Each ticket will be $25, and you can ride the course as often as you like. Brian and I will be available to move fences up and down so trainers can bring all levels on whatever part of the day suits them.

  • UPDATE 3/31/2011

We did it!  Thank you all!!!!

As some of you may have seen Jersey Fresh is looking for fence sponsorships! Last year fence sponsorship was a huge hit no thanks to generous people like us! Can we  dig into our ever evaporating bank accounts again and get together as a group again? Any amount will be accepted towards a group of Area II riders! Jersey Fresh promises to be extra special this year with new divisions and lots of great things happening – including the 2011 Bit of Britain Jersey Fresh-Fair Hill $30,000 Challenge, salutes to both The Wounded Warrior Project and Horses for Heroes, and an expanded trade fair – this year’s competition should be the most exciting and well-attended ever.

The "jump" sponsorship is $450 and "complex" is $750, but we get a $50 rebate for repeat sponsors! We'll get a nice banner! and some extra's which we can raffle of to takers of the group? I think if we can all donate a small amount again we'll get there quickly!  email me if you are in :) This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Please make checks payable to "Horse Park of New Jersey", and you can send them to me for group collection.

  • Editor's note:  Jordan approached us with the offer of sharing her blog with Area 2. She felt that writing a blog about her experience as a working student would be really useful and enjoyable to members. Jordan adds, "I grew up eventing through out Area 2 and would love to give something back to the area, which I feel I could accomplish through this blog."

Here is her first post. Please visit the blog at http://jmstordahl.blogspot.com/.  You can follow her the blog with your Google account to keep up with Jordan's posts.

    Life in the 803

Here I am, finally in Aiken. Just finished my second full day of work. Caitlin and I got down here after one dingy hotel room and twenty-one hours of driving. My car is still trashed but I’m working on that.

  • Area 2 is pleased announced the sites for this year’s Area Championships. The Area 2 Council has decided to consolidate the Championships as much as possible. After receiving bids from a number of organizers, it was decided that the upper level Area Championships will be held Plantation in September to coincide with its CIC competitions. The other Area Championship levels will be held as part of the October Virginia Horse Trials in late October.

There will be differences between the HT and the CH divisions. Of course the SJ courses will be different but there will also be differences in the XC courses. In the case of the VHT, at the Preliminary level, it will be an entirely different course. For the upper levels at Plantation, the course will be of a championship nature and may include elements of the CIC. The area will be working with these organizers and USEA to make this year’s championships something special and hope that we will not disappoint anyone.

Put these dates down on your calendar:

  • Please forgive me if you received multiple copies of the latest Optimum Times in your email box. There was a glitch in the mailing software which hopefully will not be a problem next time, but bear with us since we just changed the mailing software.

Meanwhile, you can keep your email addresses up to date in 2 ways, to avoid bouncing and missed emails, and duplicates.

    1)  USEA provides our mailing list so keep your address up to date with them

    2) Register and set up a profile here. If you use the same email address it should sync that but if it's a different one, you can update your mailing lists on your profile once you log in.

Once logged in a "user menu" appears on the top left column where you can edit your profile and newsletter subscriptions.

    Thank you for your understanding.

  • fullmoonfarmSAVE THE DATE!

    June 21-24, 2011      Opening Date - April 24, 2011  Closing Date - June 10, 2011

Open to eventers of all ages, including adults.  Offers a learning opportunity in a safe and instructional environment for those interested in experiencing a three day event with detailed instruction for every phase.  The week includes lectures, demonstrations, hands on and practice for every phase with the week ending in a judged three day event with awards.

  • Do not forget, Area II fans: the famous annual Area Silent Auction! Your chance to get discounted entries! Area II events offer entries for auction, sign up w/more than 1 bid if you like (sign-up sheets.) When the auction ends, if you're the hi bidder, it's yours! The trick is to sign up for several entries & bid what...you think will win! Get half a season's entries at a discount! Just another meeting perk!

  • I am the incoming area chair for Area 2 -- which has the most events and starters of any area in the country -- I start with lots of enthusiasm, but also recognize that this role is new for me. As Duncan Macrae steps down as the Area Chair, I face the challenge of taking over the reins from someone who has done an excellent job. He assembled a strong Area Council and guided the area through some turbulent times. I hope to build on what Duncan has left behind.

There are several purposes to this email. 1) To introduce myself, 2) Discuss USEA Area II Annual Meeting, and 3) Discuss YRAP program.

  • I could not think of a better indoctrination for an incoming Area Chair than participating in the Annual USEA meeting. In addition to the educational seminars, which are incredibly useful, I found attending meetings of the Area Chairs, open BOG, organizer, rules, licensed officials, financial, and the open forum to be incredibly valuable. It gave me an appreciation and understanding of how USEA works and where the power lies. However, rather than just deal in generalities I will point to some key issues and what I took away that I would like to share.

  • This year David O'Connor sat in the meeting and discussed his thoughts/plans on developing a pipeline from the YRAP program to the YR Program to Senior Team/Training programs. He wants to create a 'Observation Team' of coordinators/coaches/officials to be on the watch for talent in the younger ranks, work on adding training opportunities for that talent administered by USEF approved instructors, with the hopes that the US can build a pool of young up and coming riders that potentially can take the place of some of our much more senior team riders that will be retiring in the next 10 years.

  • I felt that the annual meeting reaffirms a couple of very important things to me.

That the USEA is continues to be a very viable organization that is made up of many people who are very interested in the sport for the sport itself. Sitting on the board meeting on Friday and looking at the Fall Survey it gave what I believe at this time is anecdotal in some ways, but the information about falls is a good start with providing a base to start looking at this data in a different manner. I provided the fall survey information to Ann Baumgardner and she will be putting it in the Adult Rider Newsletter that she will put out.

  • Thank you to our sponsors and speakers. We look forward to a great meeting packed with lots of information as we enter into the 2011 eventing season.

After you have renewed your membership be on the lookout for an email from Michele Schwartz titled "USEA Adult Rider membership" which will include your membership number and other information about the program. Also note that there can be a delay of up to 45 days before we receive your Adult Rider membership information from the USEA, so please be patient.

Additionally you may use the 2011 snail mail form to order Area 2 Adult Rider logo wear. There are T-shirts, ball caps, sweatshirts and lanyards for wearing keys or credientials around your neck. Prices are listed on the form and include shipping. All items are uni-sex sizing and colors are suitable for men and women.

Here is a list of jobs that are still needing to be filled:

  • The LAST Day...

I am actually writing this from my home desk, having arrived back mid afternoon after slightly less than 9 hours on the road today (Monday). So glad to be home despite the mountains of unfinished business that awaits my attention - you know exactly how it is when you are away!

Funny story, well maybe not funny, wrong adjective, maybe sad?? but you can decide...

  • Day Eight...

Whew...Glad today is over and with reasonably good results! You never know at these types of Championships just how well the riders will perform when there are such a diverse group of countries participating. This probably sounds like a stupid statement as there is always uncertainty at any event. But here, you have the obvious powerhouses such as the Brits, Kiwis and Americans (I will happily add Canadians!!! to that list as they were nothing short of spectacular today!). DOC must be very proud of his young team who supported veteran Kyle Carter with strength and assurance around the course! You also have the South Africans and Brazilians; the SA basically train in Europe and benefit from a strong developing eventing program in their own country. The South Americans are always gutsy but one always will wonder if these lesser known nations are really up to "the test." And Mike ES did his magic in course design, not catering completely to whatever the lowest common denominator might be but instead producing a fair and testing course that got most everyone home. It was a "safe" day in the sense of no riders requiring transport and only one horse who sustained a bad cut; he was shipped across the road to the vet hospital and is reported to be doing well, with a full recovery expected. But there were 10 fall forms that I collected at the end of the phase, which included 4 horse falls. It has been documented that if we can keep horses on their feet, we keep riders safer too. Common sense but this does impact how we design courses as well as how we train ourselves and our horses.

  • It's time to start getting your nominations to me for the 2010 Area 2 Adult Rider Smurfie Awards. These awards recognize fellow Ar2AR's for attributes mostly unrelated to competition performance, unlike most year-end awards. Adult Riders face many obstacles that the pro's do not. This is a way to acknowledge and reward them.

This is your chance to recognize your fellow Ar2ARs for something other than performance in competition: their spirit and drive! So please nominate freely! In mid-November you'll vote for the winner from those nominated. The winners will be announced at the 2010 Area II Annual Meeting.

Winners will receive a lovely huge ribbon, a plush Smurf doll, a Smurf figure or keychain, and some category appropriate "goodies"! VTO Saddlery will again provide most of the goodies. Thanks VTO!

  • Day Seven...

The Park is really hopping!! The jumpers are here as are the driving horses!! It is so impressive to see these huge four in hands buzzing around up and down the roads! What presence they have!! We completed our eventing dressage today and are ready for phase two tomorrow! I must say that the overall quality of the eventing dressage was very notable and reassuring to me as a rider, judge and instructor! The comparison between the best in the world in the eventing dressage and regular dressage showed many parallels and much more similarities than differences, than was in evidence even as recent as a few years ago. As a sport, we ARE making the right kind of progress!

  • Day Six...

I really don't like television. I am not one who watches much TV anyway, other than the all too infrequent movie night, that is about the extent of my tube connection. If I have free time, it is spent with my nose in a good book. At these big events, television rules! And it did today, which put Tom and I in a cranky mood to start our morning. David O'Connor did the test ride, strongly supported by almost all of the Canadians!! There were red jackets everywhere! And!!! He didn't make an error, which surprised ALL of us in a most pleasant way! Although had DOC been true to form, and made an error, it would have given all of us watching pure GLEE for future reminders!

    About that same time...

  • The latest schedule is now available for the Waredaca Training 3-Day and Eric Smiley Walking Clinic.

    Revised_Eric_Smiley_T3D_Schedule.pdf

  • Day Five

Finally...Our competition is up and running! Our seemingly "lax" schedule to date is a bit of a strange paradox to the typical frenzy of usual events. But the days still remain full and the lists never quite blank. I have been here since last Friday so a total of 6 days, with the early days necessary "prep" ones but still...it is time for the show to begin!! Having dinner tonight with the GJ found us all in agreement on that fact!

  • Day Three...rain...which is probably well timed, for the course, the crowds and the competition. Reining was occurring, as was the first full day of team Dressage. Thankfully, selfishly from a convenience standpoint, we had mostly nuisance rain instead of the forecasted deluges. Tom and I spent the morning talking to this group and that, as we continued to connect all the pieces of the puzzle. After lunch we met the Ground Jury of Marilyn Payne, David Lee from Ireland and Anne-Mette Binder from Denmark and walked the cross country with Mike E-S, Derek (Asst. CD) and Catrin Norinder from the FEI as the Jury performed their inspection and approval. The course was essentially set other than those fences where heights were still to be finalized by the Jury; primarily the frangible fences, prior to the actual pinning. Unlike this past spring, many of the fences are being pinned traditionally in the front and with reverse pinning in the back. Depending on whom you talk to, one method or the other will simply meet that person's opinion of the correct way. There is no absolute justification for either method that has full consensus of this elite group of course designers. We will see what happens Saturday.

    Funny story from the stewards...

  • vhtlogoThe Virginia Horse Trials will be hosting a team competiton for Adult Riders.  This is NOT part of The Chronicle of the Horse Team Challenge.  When you sign up make sure you list that you want to be on a team.  Even though this is not listed in the Omnibus, it is o.k. to sign up for it.  Click on the logo to check the Virginia Horse Trials website where more information will be posted when it is available.

  • Day One:

The last "non competition day," although Reining did begin their preliminaries. I have never seen so many cowboy hats in evidence as there were near the indoor today!!  First impressions offer a well-staffed group of volunteers in and around the parking area for officials and volunteers and lots of southern hospitality which makes everyone smile! But truly, everyone does seem to want to be helpful.  I met Tom/TD from Belgium, Mike ES and Derek this morning at 9:30 to walk the XC course.  The course itself is a virtual bright green ribbon against the dull green/brown grass outside of the track. QUITE the contrast, especially when viewed from the air!! The flower people, as Mike calls them, began this afternoon with their final touches. There is still much to be done yet on the course. :(  The footing is generally acceptable, but there are some places that are not so great, that will be dressed. It was still enough to cause much grumbling and mumbling by Mike as we hiked around. The irrigation has been occurring daily since we last visited in late June, but it is a "traveling" system which ends up watering the course in segments for 12 hours at a time such that the entire course gets fully irrigated twice weekly. The Jury will walk the course Monday afternoon and things WILL be completed by then.

  • The Fall Horse Trials at the Ark opens on 8/24...we are running as a one day on Saturday, Oct. 9 (Mdn, BN, N, TN, T, PT, P).

We are also holding FEH/YEH classes on Sunday, Oct. 10 (1-5yo).

This is the last grassroots/family owned USEA/USEF horse trial in North Carolina! Entry and stabling fees are the lowest in the state--and we have some of the best volunteers anywhere!

We will also be running the 4th semi-annual Waxhaw Tack Exchange Across the Levels Team Challenge at the Horse Trials--team members ride at any 3 or 4 different levels. There is no fee to ride as a team!

Thinking about moving up? Try the TN and PT divisions! Have a green horse or rider who needs a solid outing? The Mdn course jumps mimic their larger counterparts, but are kept under 2'3"!

The xc tracks have been seeded and will be agri-vated (the aerator that shimmies) prior to the event--if you haven't been to the Ark in the last 12 months, you'll be amazed at how thick the turf has become!

  • Four of us from New Jersey (Carey Williams, Anne Seline, Jorgen & Nick Olijslager) set off to GMHA in Vermont to participate in the Classic Format Training & Novice Three Day this past week. What an amazing adventure! Let me first say eventers are a really fun bunch of people!!! We cheer each other on all day-long, yes, us New Jersey folks are maybe a little louder than the New Englanders! Another example of the camaraderie; Anne was practicing her jog in the parking lot and her hat goes flying (dressed for a “garden party”!)... looked at me and asks if I have any bobbypins... sure I have those in my pocket.. Eric Smiley is a world renowned eventer, FEI judge and trainer from Ireland. (See www.ericsmiley.com)

The Adult Rider Training Three Day at Waredaca has brought Eric to the US to help in the educational portion of the T3D and Area II has arranged for him to stay over for two days and provide that educational benefit to all members of Area II. This “clinic” is open to all Area II members!

This clinic is open to all, Adults, Young Riders, Juniors, Parents and Trainers.  It is designed to be a “walking” clinic where the participants will be outfitted with radios with headsets so that everyone can hear Eric and benefit from his valuable knowledge and insight into Eventing.  It is a unique opportunity to hear and see what a Judge is looking for in the Dressage Phase, then there will be the opportunity to go out on Cross Country on two separate days and walk courses, watch horses go cross country, and watch and walk Show Jumping courses.  There will be evening lectures and lots of opportunities for one on one with Eric.

The clinic is being sponsored by your Area II Council in conjunction with the Area II Adult Rider Sponsored T3D.  It is a unique opportunity to spend important educational time with a top FEI Judge, Clinician and Competitor on site at an event.

Perhaps there are some misunderstandings regarding the event evaluation. Let me try to clear those up!

  • Roanoke Valley Pony Club's "Spring Frolic" Combined Tests, Dressage Tests, and XC Clinic is Saturday, April 11, at Green Hill Park Equestrian Center in Salem (exit 137 off 81).

We'd love your support as a competitor, sponsor, or spectator! Our web site has the forms for entering the show or sponsoring a class or division on the left hand side of the home page, below the calendar. Go to www.RoanokeValleyPonyClub.blogspot.com and look for "Forms" on the left. This is one of our club's primary fundraisers, and we're a bit worried that the crazy winter might mean that folks are not ready to come out and play yet. But what a great, low-key first outing! And the XC part is a clinic, perfect for first-timers or those who are rusty or looking to move up a level. (Our dressage judge is Tracey Smith-Oliver, and we are still finalizing a XC clinician. I will post that on the site when it's set.)

Contact me with any questions you have, and thanks in advance for your help spreading the word about our show!

  • Do you want to be more confident and consistent in quality this year?  Consider some cross training and clinics to make the pennies go further and the eventing experience more successful.  The dressage tests are new this year, so consider doing your tests 2x at a dressage show to work out the timing. The comments from the judges make for great homework assignments.  There are a few "judges point of view" clinics also scheduled to help you know what the judges want to see out of the new tests.

Always getting a rail in show jumping or your horse is a little looky?  Consider some of the jumper shows where you can jump multiple rounds at different heights. Consider not going for speed, but for control, accuracy, and keeping the rails up.

  • For those people who have never been to an annual meeting, it is a time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones with similar passion for horses and eventing, exchange new ideas and learn about old ones, recognize owners, riders and horses for their achievements and satisfy the general business requirements of the association. Of course there is the Trade Fair where you can shop for last minute Christmas presents or research products by talking directly to a knowledgeable representative of the manufacturer. There are always so many meetings, open forums and presentations going on at the same time, that it is hard to choose which one to go to.

The good news is now a large part of the meeting is covered on the USEA web site so that you can catch up with what you missed.

This year represented the 50 year Anniversary of the USEA. It was hosted by our home area 2 in Reston Virginia. One of the highlights included a day long Instructor Certification Program on Designing Show Jumping Courses by Richard Jeffries held on Wednesday at Frying Pan Park. It started with a morning lecture inside and in the afternoon moved to the indoor. We helped build a course which was then jumped by 4 different horses at different levels. Richard demonstrated that by using the same jumps but changing the order and track, how to increase the difficulty of the course with minimal work to the jump crew. He feels that it is a mistake to have every level jump around the same track.

  • As an Area we are in the process of revamping the Annual Meeting in some different ways in order to increase attendance and make it fun and educational for everyone from amateurs to pros and everyone in between. In addition to the educational program, the Annual Awards are handed out at this time as well with beautiful being handed out to the best in the area.

The date of the meeting is one change that is being considered, moving the present time of the end of November over to the end of January or the beginning of February. The end of November can be very busy for most of us, from the end of the eventing season to the beginning of the holiday season, and the meeting would potentially be at a lower priority, understandably, for the majority of the membership which could, again understandably, decrease attendance.  The date change could help with that, plus having it in the middle of the winter can get us looking forward to something horsey in the middle of the winter riding doldrums!
Another thought would be the change from an Awards Banquet to an Awards Luncheon. This change would allow those who live farther away in the Area to only have to stay one night (either the night before or the night after) or no nights at all and still have a day full of educational opportunities and awards and still get home at a reasonable time. Almost like going to a horse trial!

This is in no way a complete list and is definitely still a planning in progress, so any input from the membership is welcome. We are also looking for ideas of what people would like to listen to as far as educational seminars, so any thoughts on that are also encouraged. Please contact Julie Augustine at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.t with any ideas, suggestions, or opinions.

This meeting is for you, the members, and we want to make it a destination for you to look forward to next winter!

  • Dressage Tests Preview

viewfromspectatorsOn a sunny but chilly Sunday, January 10, 2010 about 20 brave souls ventured forth to Plain Dealing Farm in Scottsville, VA to attend a preview of the 2010 USEA Dressage Tests hosted by the Central Virginia Combined Training Association. Carter Bass, R Dressage Judge and r Breed Judge, was on hand to provide observers with a unique and invaluable educational experience. She prefaced each level with an explanation of what the judge would be looking for at that level. As the demo riders rode the tests, she offered the audience a running commentary on each of the movements. After each ride she quizzed the audience about aspects of the test and gave pointers on how to ride the test to maximize performance and improve scores. Below are some of her comments:

  • DRIVING ON THE EDGE OF DISASTER.

(Don’t trailer your horse another foot unless you have taken special precautions)

My husband, Jerry, and I were all so happy at the results after the Maryland Horse Trials ended on July 12, 2009. My daughter, Devlin, and her magnificent horse, Goodtime Goggles (“Charlie”) did a great job on the cross country course. Devlin finished third in the junior training division. We loaded up the trailer and the venerable old Tahoe and headed home at about four p.m.

We were tired from the exertions of the weekend. We arrived at the Horse Trials quite late on Saturday. We got up very early so that Devlin could take as much time as possible preparing for the three phases. It was a very warm day, and we were all in the hot sun.

The sun continued to heat us through the windows of the Tahoe as we started off. Both my daughter and I let ourselves drift off to sleep. This left my husband without anyone with whom to talk. At one point, just about an hour into the trip, as we drove on highway 15, I noticed the vehicles wobble and asked my husband if he was alright. He insisted that he was fine. I let myself go back to dozing, an almost fatal mistake.

  • I have spent this evening saying goodbye to a very dear friend. Jack taught me to ride, correctly, after I’d taught myself to ride very badly. And now, he is gone.

He was never really gentle in his teaching, at least not as he taught me.

  • Adult Rider of the Year and Adult Rider Horses of the Year announced...

  • Congratulations to our Area II Champions for 2009!

  • I am delighted to be coming on as the new Area II Adult Rider Coordinator and can only hope to fill one of Cindy DePorter’s two shoes. It is a daunting taskI’ve had the luxury of several months becoming familiar with what the position entails and how Cindy and others see it as evolving. In this short piece, I will note some of the ideas that we’ve kicked about, in the hopes that other adult riders will chime in and provide suggestions and direction.

First, what IS the Adult Rider Program?

It is a USEA educational program with groups in all ten Areas, with the Missionto increase adult rider participation in eventing by providing education and recognition and offering communication and camaraderie.”  Just because you are an adult, and you ride, does not make a you a member of the program – you have to join!

  • HAMPSTEAD, MD – March 8, 2010 – Legacy Stables will be offering a discount to USEA Members at their April 10-11 eventing clinic with 4-star rider Bonnie Mosser. Owned and operated by Leeandra and Joe Wesley, Legacy Stables features serious training in a fun, educational atmosphere.

The clinic will consist of two group lessons (not to exceed 4 people) concentrating on jumping, both in the ring and then out on Legacy Stable’s recognized cross-country course. Group lesson length will depend on the number of riders in each group.

  • racehorse_symposiumFascination and love for the Thoroughbred horse seems to be alive and well in America! Who would have thought that 350 people cared enough about this subject to show up so eager to learn something new? I hope they came away with a renewed sense of admiration and respect for these horses, and a renewed commitment to improving their own riding and training skills.

I had my fingers crossed when JK Adams rode in at the start on Monster Chaser. JK has ridden in 5000 races, winning 1000 of them, so he wasn't nervous, but Kim Clark of Thoroughbred Placement & Rescue had warned me that the horse only had 7 days of post-race training and could be a handful.

  • I hope that this issue of Optimum Times finds you well and winding up a great Eventing season! This is our first electronic issue and I am thrilled that we have moved away from the paper format. We are saving a HUGE amount of money on printing and postage not to mention a bunch of trees! And speaking of saving paper, don’t forget that there is now a link on the Area II website that allows you to fill out event evaluations online and email them to me. It’s fast and easy and I can then forward your comments to the event organizer electronically so they can consider your comments before their next event.

I know that the Spring Omnibus can’t be too far away from my inbox and I am sure that many of you are working on plans for the 2010 season. I hope that you will consider the Area Championships in your plans. Look for the dates elsewhere in this issue.

2009 presented a bit of a challenge with the economy being so much in doubt and that will be reflected in the total number of starters for the year. This is very hard on our organizers because every entry lost comes right off the bottom line. In the spring, Red Hills (Fl.) was forced to cancel their very popular event because their early entries were very low. Faced with a huge cash outlay and no promise of recouping their investment, the organizers were left with no option. Similarly, Morven has cancelled their Classic Three Day for 2010. It is an immense help to the organizers if you can send your entries early…As close to the opening date as possible. I know there are a multitude of reasons to hold out (this from the king of the late entry!) but if you can, please send your entries early! I know our Organizers will appreciate it!

Speaking of the Classic Format 3 Day, I can’t urge you strongly enough to make it your goal to participate in at least one Classic three day event if you can. Whether it’s a training three day like the one the Area II Adult Riders sponsor at Waredaca or one of the few long format CCI*’s that remain in the world, (all of them in the U.S.) you will find that the experience is invaluable. If you can’t participate as a competitor, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved as a volunteer. It takes a lot of people to run a Classic. If you do not support these events, they will disappear and with them, the last chance to ride A,B,C as well as D. Not to mention a hugely important part of eventing!

Mark your calendars! December 2-6, 2009 will see the return of the USEA National Meeting to Area II. And, it’s the 50th anniversary of the USEA! Since Area II will be the host Area, we will have a lot to do to help put on a premier event. Please help us make this year’s Annual Meeting one to remember. We will be looking for MANY volunteers to help out. Hopefully, we will have enough volunteers that each can spend just a couple of hours helping and have the remainder of the time free to attend meetings and seminars. Watch the website for more information but by all means, help out if you can! Look elsewhere in this issue for a list of potential volunteer jobs that need to be filled.

I am thrilled to report that our Young Rider squads had a glorious time at the Kentucky Horse Park. The Junior CH-J* team of Molly Curtis, Huxley Greer, Colleen McKittrick and Laura Roberts won the team GOLD, handily beating the Ontario/BC team by nearly 30 points! Laura was also winner of the individual GOLD medal and Molly Curtis finished 4th individually.

The CH-Y** team of Alex Martone, Alyssa Peterson and Katherine Samuels had a great week too! The only team without a drop score, all three pairs went well and just missed the gold by a few points, taking home the team SILVER medal. Katherine brought home the Individual BRONZE medal, with Alyssa finishing in 8th place individually and Alex in 10th.

My heartiest congratulations to the riders, coaches, coordinators and grooms and parents who have worked so hard to make this dream come true. You are ALL stars!

Now is the time to start planning for the next NAJYRC competition. Interested? Look at the Area II website for more info on how to get involved. And don’t forget the Young Rider Advancement Program (YRAP). Designed for younger riders who are not ready for the one star level, this is a great way to get involved and work your way up to a team.

As I write this, the Training Three Day is underway at Waredaca. The T3D is sponsored by the Area II Adult Riders and is their biggest event of the season. If you dream of joining the 4 star ranks or are just looking for a challenge at training, the T3D should be on your calendar. Run as a long format three day at the training level, this event is the ultimate competitive goal for many and a learning opportunity for all. If your goal is to move up to FEI recognized events, the T3D is a great place to get your feet wet in what it’s like to compete at the top of eventing. And it’s a bargain! For about the price of an event with stabling, T3D participants receive instruction in every aspect of the three day experience from some of the top names in our sport. Like Jimmy Wofford and Karen O’Connor. (And about a zillion others who so generously donate their time and expertise.) T3D riders and their grooms receive meals and lots of give aways as well. And best of all, this is an experience that builds your knowledge and will forever change your relationship with your horse. You just can’t help but develop a new respect for your pony after doing a long format 3 day.

The T3D concept is now recognized by the USEA and there are several around the country with more on the way. Ask anyone who’s been to one…It’s a blast!

Do you use the Area II website? Have you checked it out since Cheryl has revamped it? There are a lot of nice features that are available to our members. Like the ability to advertise items for sale, etc. And if you have something that might be of interest to other Area II members, why not submit an article or a picture? We want to make this site more valuable to you so please send your comments to me or to Cheryl.

maisie_tinaAfter losing a gray horse to EPM in the Spring of 1995 my husband saw an ad for a 5 yr old gray TB mare.  We went to ride her, and watched her jump.  She made it clear that jumping was her favorite activity.  I wanted a horse that really wanted to jump as I had a previous horse that did not want to event.  So she came home in 1995.

By the next year we started eventing at Beginner Novice, 1997 - Novice, 1998 - Training and by 1999 we made the big jump to Preliminary.

  • Waredaca's October Horse Trials, including the Area 2 Training 3-Day is just around the corner!!

As you know, we really need your help in order for these competitions to run, so please let us know what days you will be able to help us.

Each volunteer will receive a 'Waredaca Bucks' voucher, which can be  used for anything Waredaca offers: cross country schooling, lessons, board, training, entries, logo wear and so on. The equivalent is $25/4 hours; maximum to earn $50/day, which would be a full day of volunteering.

  • Bruce Davidson, Sr., World Champion eventer, will be hosting a fall eventing clinic at Chesterland Farm, Unionville, PA. The clinic will take place Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 and Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, with a special cocktail reception Friday night for participants, Oct. 30, 2009.

Two sessions of up to 8 riders will be held each day, with stadium jumping on Saturday, and cross-country riding on Sunday over the course at Chesterland.

  • Waredaca and Area 2 will be following the USEA  Training Level Three-Day Event Test  Policy for the 2009 Training 3-Day. This document gives the specifications for time, distance, speed, and other important information.

    Download a copy here.

  • In an effort to keep all information consistent and up to date, logistical information for the Training 3-Day in Area II will be posted on the Waredaca website.

There is a Training 3-Day section under competitions on the top menu at www.waredaca.com.

    Thank you!

  • This year’s theme was “Area II getting lucky in Kentucky!” and boy did we ever!! The championships were held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY home of the 2010 World Equestrian Games. After a very successful spring for our juniors and young riders, we were able to field a complete team with 2 individuals in the CCI* and a team of 3 for the CCI**.

  • USEA Annual MeetingThe USEA Annual Meeting will take place December 2-6, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency in Reston VA. In addition to the Year End Awards Luncheon, the Hall of Fame Dinner, and the many forums and educational offerings, activities celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the USEA are also in the works. Our Area 2 meeting will be in conjunction with this rather than a separate meeting since it is located in the heart of Area 2.Area II at the National Meeting

  • steuart_pittmanClinician teams up with Maryland Therapeutic Riding and Thoroughbred Placement Organizations.

Crownsville, Md. - July 28, 2009 - On October 4, nationally recognized horseman Steuart Pittman will present the first Retired Racehorse Training Symposium for horse lovers interested in learning more about working with Thoroughbred horses in successful careers after the racetrack.

The event is supported by Maryland Therapeutic Riding, the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses (CANTER), Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue, Leighton Farm, and a soon-to-be-announced roster of sponsors.

  • It does seem strange how some events are over-subscribed and some are not getting enough entries in 2009.

This question was posed this question on the Area 2 Adult Riders’ chat list....

“If you saw events that had lower priced entries (I'm talking recognized here) would it make a difference or are you choosing your recognized events for facility/courses, location? What is making you choose the events you choose? Are you more likely to do unrecognized events because of costs? Are you doing fewer events because of finances, or other reasons? Would you do more if they were less expensive? Is safety playing into any of your decisions?”

Following is a summary of the responses. Where do you fit in?

  • If you've ever taken a lesson with Sharon White, or she's just made you smile as she pulled into an event in her bright orange rig, then you know how friendly, helpful and downright humble she is. Now Sharon needs our help.

Her truck and trailer were totaled in an accident on the way to the Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials a few weeks ago. Although she is fine, and her horses are fine, she is going to have to buy a new rig, and insurance is only paying about a third of what it will take to replace what she had.

A group of her students is getting together to put on a really fun fundraiser. They’re planning DerbyCross* Lite, a competition from elementary through preliminary with a combination of show jumping and cross-country but no dressage! This won't be a team event like regular DerbyCross, but it will feature some great prizes and special awards.
  • Denis Glaccum underwent double by-pass heart surgery Monday at the Christiana Hospital. The surgeon said it was a classic case and that everything is fine. What a great hospital and thanks to Tim Gardner who kept a watchful eye on the proceedings. Denis should be released in 3-5 days depending on how well he fast he can learn to do things for himself. He is not allowed to be waited on – I like that one. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

  • In the coming weeks, Merial will provide a series of columns from experienced veterinarians. These columns are based on questions Merial receives every day from horse owners across the country. Chances are, you or someone you know has the same question, such as:

QUESTION: Do certain horses have a higher risk of developing stomach ulcers than others?

  • First off we have downsized our Fall Horse Trials for 2009 into an unrecognized horse trial.  We have new organizers, Sandy McCormack and Helen Hayn. We hope that you will come out and support the horse trials which will be on our traditional weekend of October 17-18, 2009. If all goes well this year and Sandy and Helen find enough people to help them with the daunting task of running a horse trial - we expect to come back next fall with recognized status.

  • Yvonne Lucas Training Session Contest

Advanced-level eventer Yvonne Lucas has generously donated a 3-day mini-camp for T3D aspirants (either '09 or '10). This includes: 3-4 night's board for their horse at Yvonne's Red Moon Farm, and one lesson a day: (day 1) dressage, (day 2) stadium, and (day 3) cross-country/ galloping/ steeplechase (off-site). In addition, you'll be discussing theory, riding strategy, conditioning, calculating minute markers, riding roads & tracks, horse care, etc.

Yvonne will provide stall/straw bedding/turnout. Winner would be responsible for hauling the horse, hay and grain, and their own accommodations, etc. Winner would have the possibility of riding other horses at my farm in addition to their own at no additional cost.

Now the important part: How do YOU win?!?

  • The Professional Riders Organization ended a successful weekend at the Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials on Sunday.  The weekend included guided course walks, a reception for new members, an exciting silent auction and PRO riders winning top honors.

“We were pleased by the reception the Professional Riders Organization received at Stuart,” said Laura VanderVliet, a distinguished event rider and PRO founder. “Not only are we grateful for the encouragement and excitement riders and spectators expressed, we are extremely proud of how our riders performed.”

Start thinking about the "Chronicle of the Horse Adult Team Challenge" which will be held in November at the Virginia Horse Trials Oct. 30-Nov. 1, at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA.

This is always a fun event, and I hope we have a great showing this year. I was out at Inavale in Oregon for the ATC's a couple of weeks ago. They had five preliminary teams, four training teams, five novice teams and one beginner novice team. A really great showing!

With that said I have a surprise for you this year so if you are a paid Adult Rider member there is a little something special if you participate in the ATC's this year. So please let me know if you are planing on being on a team, or want a team , or whatever.

  • The Marlborough Horse Trials and Marlborough Pony Club are co-hosting a two-day eventing clinic with Eric Smiley on June 9th and 10th. To date I do not have enough entries to even come close to filling or breaking even on this clinic. We priced it very low to cover expenses and leave buffer to pay a facility fee should we need to move to the indoor arena due to weather.

Eric is an FEI Official and International competitor in addition to being a wonderful clinician.  We have a great event planned for the two-days, including an evening seminar with wine and cheese and light snacks.

  • CDCTA is pleased to announce the addition of a Baby Novice (18") Horse Trial Test Division and the USEA Young Event Horse Classes for 4 and 5 year olds to their June Horse Trial lineup.

        PO Box 387
        Scottsville VA 24590

Please let Molly know what level group you would like to ride in, and whether you want to show jump or do xc.

We also wanted to let everyone know that the proceeds from xc schooling for the months of April and May will also be donated to the Young Riders Program, so come on out and school at Plain Dealing!

The Equine Science Programs at Rutgers University and the University of Maryland are seeking survey study participants that have competed one or more horses at the CIC/CCI*** or CIC/CCI**** level in 2008.

The survey is available online and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. The information gathered from the survey will help researchers plan future research to target these discipline specific nutritional concerns and problems. • NAJYRC 2008

What a journey we had to the wild, wild west this year. NAJYRC this year was held at the beautiful Colorado Horse Park in Parker, CO. Due to the extend travel and acclimation issues for horses and riders, we held our training camp over 10 days at the O’Brien’s Kincora Farm in Vass, North Carolina. They were kind enough to donate their facility at no charge to the program again this year. Much appreciation from all of us.

Camp began on the 18th of July with the attendees including Laura Roberts, Kaitlin Spurlock, Kate Bagwell, Alex Martone Molly Curtiss and Benita Strini. All horse’s and rider’s arrived geared up and ready to go! This year Area II had only a CH * junior team and did not have any Young Riders qualified for the CH**. I am hopeful for next year though!

  • North American Thoroughbred Society Adapts Award Program to Current Economic Climate

Preserves High Service Level and Enhances Benefits while Reducing Membership Cost

Recognizing the impact of tough economic times on the equine industry and its members, The North American Thoroughbred Society (NATBS), a company that promotes the interests of Jockey Club-registered North American Thoroughbreds, today announced that it has revised its popular North American Series award program. The revised recognition program maintains a high level of service to members while significantly reducing membership costs and extending benefits.

  • The Red Hills Horse Trials scheduled for March 13-15 has been cancelled. The organizing committee of Jane Barron, Terrie Brooks and Marvin Mayer reluctantly made the decision today due to a lack of entries.  Red Hills Horse Trials has been one of the USA’s premier events for many years and a favorite of riders and spectators alike.  Its cancellation will leave a large gap in the early spring schedule.

“It is with extreme sadness that we must cancel the 2009 trials,” said Jane Barron.

Riders compete in an actual "classic" three day event, with roads and tracks and steeplechase, a "10-minute box"as well as cross country, in addition to dressage and stadium jumping. Formal horse inspections also take place on the first day and on the last day. What makes it fun is the wonderful educational opportunities for both riders and volunteers.

    Speakers

    • Gretchen Butts will give us a recap of her Hong Kong experience.Gretchen Butts has served the USEA in just about every capacity possible. A past board member and VP of Education, she is currently Director of the USEA Officials Advisory Panel and the Educational Consultant to the Association. She also is an advisor to the USEF Eventing Technical Committee, a member of the Active Athletes and Safety Committees as well as being very involved in cross country course design with the licensed designers and builders. Gretchen is herself a licensed judge and technical delegate-- nationally and internationally, organized three USEA recognized events this year, and while doing all this had piloted her horse Zydeco at the Four Star Level as well as training some younger horses. Gretchen is one of those rare people who understands just about every rule of the sport, and is happy to pass this information along to everyone in the form of her Get Smart column in Eventing USA, or at the various competitions and clinics she organizes and attends. Her dedication to the sport, her horses, her family, and the USEA is truly appreciated.
    • Kelley Williams will be share with us how she manages to start and bring along young horses. After graduating from St. Mary’s College with a degree in math, Kelley married high school sweetheart, Danny Williams, and began working for Ridgeview Veterinary Practice (large animal veterinarians). Working with Dr. Will Engel at the practice has helped fine-tune her horsemanship skills through the years. In addition, she continued with her riding and competing and eventually found a love of retraining young horses off the track. That, coupled with her passion for eventing, led to her current career. Kelley is a naturally gifted trainer who always seems to know what the young horses need and possesses an infinite amount of patience with them. Over the past few years, Kelley has found incredible gratification in her teaching and coaching, and feels very strongly that she learns as much from her students as they learn from her.

The Stable Scoop Radio Show Goes Live With An Entertaining Look At All Things Horse

    posted Nov. 6, 2008

The Horse Radio Network is pleased to announce the launch of it's first weekly Internet radio show. The Stable Scoop Radio Show takes an entertaining look at a different horse topic each week. With the help of the leading experts, veteran online radio hosts Glenn the Geek and Helena B. bring you a light hearted informative look at the topic of the week. Appealing to a variety of equestrian disciplines and horse enthusiasts of all sorts, the Stable Scoop Radio Show is available for listening on their site at www.stablescoop.com or through iTunes.

Glenn the Geek and Helena B. are familiar with hosting duties on the Internet as they hosted one of the first horse podcasts over two years ago. Both are experienced horse people who take a somewhat irreverent look at the horse industry and are not shy about sharing their opinions. Glenn is a trained improvisational actor and a horse husband with over 20 years of experience at both. Helena is an experienced horsewoman, mom of a horse-loving six year old and avid fox hunter. "Helena provides a great counterbalance to some of Glenn's wackiness," comments Jennifer, a groupie of the hosting pair.

With an emphasis on the everyday rider, show segments include Horse News, Blog of the Week, Stable Spotlight, the 2010 Games Report, and interviews with top riders as well as rider's in the "barn next door."

Listeners can catch new shows each Friday at www.stablescoop.com or by subscribing through iTunes. The show is available to download to MP3 players or iPods, so folks can listen while they are doing their favorite barn chores or on the road to the next horse show!

    Training camp went really well...

Teams consist of three or four riders of any age/division competing in any three or four consecutive levels (i.e. one rider each at Preliminary, Training, Novice, and BegNovice). The best three consecutive scores will be used to determine final team standings. If a team has only three members, they must ride in consecutive levels. Riders will continue to earn individual awards and USEA points in their respective divisions.

The spring USEA event, and had over 20 teams compete! Riders really seemed to enjoy being able to compete with their coaches, children, barnmates, etc. We even allowed the Maiden riders’ scores to count in the team competition, so Junior riders were thrilled (there were several M,BN,N teams)…including a YRAP team.

The synopsis that follows is my own paraphrase of what was discussed at the summit. It is by no means comprehensive. What I report here is likely colored by my own personal bias and experience, despite my best efforts to report the facts and remain objective. (Except for the long format *, which I am shamelessly in favor of!!!!!)

    Some introductory discussion

David O’Connor. Opening remarks. 2% of rider falls result in injury. Few of those are serious.

50% of horse falls result in serious rider/horse injury. Plainly, reducing horse falls will go a long way to reducing catastrophic injury for both horses and riders.

The focus of the summit should be on how to reduce horse falls.

Kevin Baumgardner: Praised Jimmy Wofford and Danny Warrington’s editorial pieces.

Expressed a need for us all to unite and become “evangelists” for safety.

Registrations are open for the 2008 Year End Points and Awards Program.

This program differs slightly from the National program, so it’s a good idea to read the rules and review eligibility, how points are calculated, fees, and deadlines.

For 2008, the program has a new component – a Volunteer Incentive (more information is below). The sport only exists because of volunteers, and those have been harder and harder to come by for many organizers in recent years. To hopefully encourage more people to give volunteering a try, eight hours of volunteer work are now required in order to qualify for the Year End Points Program. This volunteer work can be fence judging, scoring, scribing, set up, take down, stuffing packets, or really just about anything directly relating to Eventing. So, call your local organizer and find out how you can help them out! Full details about this new program are also in the rules, and the submission form can be found in the links to the right.

It is the rider’s responsibility to check this website frequently during the season and verify that the points shown are accurate. It is also the rider’s responsibility to submit any “out of area” points as those are not tracked automatically. All of the points tracking is done manually, and mistakes are made, so please contact the chair to alert her to any possible discrepancies. 2008 Volunteer Incentive Program

Any USEA Area II member wishing to receive points toward Area II Year End Awards must volunteer at least 8 hours during the current calendar year, preferably at an Area 2 recognized event

The total hour requirement can be completed in any variety of ways. For example, volunteering for 1 day at an event, or 2 half days at different events. The intention of this new requirement is to encourage riders to volunteer at events as fence judges, workers, etc., but any volunteer activity that relates to eventing will be considered.

Each volunteer will be responsible for contacting the respective organizer (s), coordinating their own volunteer efforts, and obtaining confirmation from the organizer, event secretary, or other designated person. Upon completion of the required hours, the volunteer will submit confirmation of the volunteer hours to the Area 2 Awards chair (Susan MacRae.)

Forms are available in the links at the top right.

  • Training Three Day Event Area 2
The Training Level Three Day Event is an educational hybrid competition; it is officially recognized by the United States Eventing Association as an educational activity. Riders compete in an actual "classic" three day event, with roads and tracks and steeplechase, a "10-minute box" as well as cross country, in addition to dressage and stadium jumping. Formal horse inspections also take place on the first day and on the last day. What makes it fun is the wonderful educational opportunities for both riders and volunteers.
