Classic Three-Day Events

Area II is proud to be host to two events holding 2019 Hylofit USEA Classic Series Three-Day Events. Waredaca Farm, and organizers Robert and Gretchen Butts, will be scheduling the Waredaca fall three-day event for Novice, Training and Preliminary levels, and Maryland Horse Trials at Loch Moy Farm, organized by Carolyn McIntosh, is scheduling a Beginner Novice Classic three-day event in October. Waredaca has been holding a three-day event for almost two decades, and Maryland Horse Trials will be holding their second edition this year.

What is a classic three-day event?

A “classic” three-day event is the previous format of the sport of eventing. While today, most events do still have dressage, cross-country and show jumping, the classic includes the Endurance element on cross-country day, and also takes place over three days. Endurance consists of a pair of roads and tracks sections, which are performed at a slower pace; a fast paced steeplechase timed for speed, then the traditional cross-country jumping test. The first day is always dressage, and the final day is show jumping. Veterinary inspections take place at the beginning of the event, and before show jumping. The demands are high for fitness on both the rider and the horse, and the classic is considered an ultimate test of horsemanship in the sport of eventing.

Who can participate?

Classic three-day events are open to any rider who is qualified for the level! Juniors and adult amateurs make up the bulk of most entries but professionals can also be seen in the entry list. And anyone can volunteer! Many positions are needed to put on all three phases. Here’s the qualifications.

How do you get started?

First, visit the USEA website and download the new 2019 USEA Hylofit Classic Series Guidelines here  (downloadable PDF). In addition, your reading list must include the great resources available at, and when information is available at Maryland Horse Trials, it will be posted here.
