Beginner Novice – Junior/YR

Carsan Rucci & Paint My Memories

I have been riding for 8 years.  I train with Ange Bean for dressage and Becky Weik for jumping; I also take lessons with several local eventers.  As an avid member and the Junior Liaison for French Creek Equestrian Association, I have met many inspirational people who I am able to learn and better myself from.  I have owned my pony Kito “Paint My Memories” for three years and before that I leased him for five years.  Kito was a lesson pony, the first pony that I ever rode.   As we formed a bond, I saw potential in him to do more. He had the passion in his heart to please and do right.  With Kito’s strong willed attitude, superb athletic ability and a good head on his shoulders I knew he could do more.

I set a goal for the year of 2013. My goal was to qualify for and go to National Pony Club Championships in Eventing with Kito.  I did not only achieve my goal, but I ended up winning the overall Beginner Novice division.  After championships I caught the bug for Eventing.  I have continued to do several events to qualify and prepare myself for USEA Area 2 Championships.   Kito and I placed well in that event.  It could not have been possible without my family and trainers putting up with my crazy pony and I. Everyone believed in us and worked with us to make this truly my best year yet.  We are finishing this eventing season at the top of the USEA Beginner Novice Leaderboard and placing well with many points in Area 2.  I owe this success to my partnership with my amazing pony Kito.

Beginner Novice – Junior/YR

My name is Gillian Warner and I am 14 years old. I am competing with my new mare, Peerless.  I recently got Peerless (or Punky) in October 2012 from Phyllis Dawson and her team at Windchase. It was a long search to find Punky, but it was well worth the wait!

I am extremely blessed to have had such a great experience in eventing on both my old competition horse, CNF Erin Darlin', and Peerless. I have also had such great support from my friends, family, and all of my wonderful trainers.

Both Punky and I are still learning and it's been a great experience to grow with such an amazing horse. She makes me work, but keeps everything fun in the process. Punky is a great little mare; we actually only competed in two recognized Beginner Novice events this year... one at the New Jersey Horse Park where we got 3rd in Open BN and then at the Area 2 Championships at Morven Park where we placed 2nd! We recently moved up to Novice and are aiming to compete in more events at Novice next year.

I am so happy with how this year has worked out. I'm extremely grateful for the group of wonderful people I have to help me; it wouldn't have been such a great year without them! I'm definitely looking forward to 2014!

Thank you Area 2 eventing!

Hannah Ong & Lump Sum

Hometown: Beltsville, MD

Hannah is a forensic psychiatrist who works for the State of Maryland in a maximum-security forensic hospital. After being fortunate enough to lease a series of upper-level schoolmasters, Hannah purchased Lump Sum, an unraced thoroughbred, in November 2010. Purchased as an unbroke six year old, "Stash" was broke and started by Hannah - her first time starting a horse totally from scratch. After a slow start due to several pasture accidents, 2013 was finally Stash's year to get out there and compete. Hannah and Stash started off the season in Aiken, then completed several events in Area II during the summer and early fall. In addition to eventing, Stash competed in Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage, and in-hand classes in 2013. Hannah and Stash are hoping to move up to Novice in 2014

Beginner Novice - Open - Champion

Suzy Gehris & Taking A Taxi

Taxi enjoyed his year gaining so much confidence that he tried his hand at Novice towards the end of the season. He thanks his 'dad' Jim Gehris for patiently taking him many places this summer, feeding him carrots, and taking care of him. He proudly stood in the trailer under the flags Jim flew at the CDCTA HT on honor of Veterans Day and USMC birthday and thanks him for his service. He knows he is a lucky pony and is honored to be part of the Area 2 Awards program !

Beginner Novice -  Young Horse

Carolyn Rice & Jayvyn

2013 didn’t go at all as I had originally planned due to my mare getting laid up at the very beginning of the season.  So her much younger half-brother Jayvyn was brought out and went to his first event at the Morven Park spring horse trials.  He was very green at that point, including never having been in a dressage ring before that day.  Showing what a terrific mind he has though he finished 4th at BN.  It was then I thought this might turn out to be an ok year despite the big change in plans.

Jayvyn went on to have several great outings at BN throughout the year, and his last horse trial  of the year he was fantastic over a tough Novice XC course at Morven Park.  It was easy to forget that he is only 4 years old. The real focus of our year though was the YEH series.  He qualified for the championships at Fair Hill after a great showing at Waredaca in August.  At Fair Hill he truly shined in the jumping portion, earning amazing scores.  It was a thrill to be apart of the awards ceremony on my homebred, especially since I was the only amateur to finish in the ribbons.  I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do in 2014!
